Dallas is an amazing place. A world-class destination for business, economics and recreation, it is easy to see what makes this an area popular for both residents and vacationers. Home to a population of over 4 million residents within its metropolitan area, it is considered one of the most popular cities in Texas and the U.S.
As a 20 year old, it is not uncommon to be going to college or working with others much older than you in Dallas, however, the law is clear. If you are under 21, you are not allowed to drink or possess alcohol. However, each state has its own rules and regulations regarding laws such as minor in possession. For example, in Texas, the law provides three unique exceptions to this rule in general. These exceptions include:
- A minor who is possessing alcohol within the scope of their employment – the minor shall still not consume
- A minor may purchase or possess alcohol when then minor is directly supervised by a peace officer engaged in enforcing the minor in possession laws such as a sting operation
- A minor in the visible presence of their parent, guardian, spouse or other adult to whom you have been committed by a court may possess alcohol
Overall, the rules in Texas are quite clear, if you are convicted of possessing alcohol as a minor or are convicted of providing alcohol to a minor, you will face serious repercussions. For those minors who are convicted of an MIP or minor in possession, the punishment is a fine of up to $500, requirement of completion of an alcohol awareness class, up to 40 hours of community service and a temporary loss or even denial of a drivers license. While the actual punishment may only be a Class C misdemeanor, this is still a serious matter.
