Mustangs of Las Colinas

The Mustangs of Las Colinas is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Irving, Texas. Located in Williams Square Plaza in the Las Colinas Urban Center, the impressive bronze sculpture features nine larger-than-life wild mustangs appearing to gallop through a flowing stream. The artwork combines natural movement, Texas heritage, and detailed craftsmanship to create a memorable public space for residents and visitors. The sculpture was created by Robert Glen, a renowned wildlife artist who was commissioned by Las Colinas developer Ben H. Carpenter in 1976. Carpenter wanted a major work of art that could represent the independent spirit and natural history of Texas while becoming the centerpiece of the developing Las Colinas community. Glen spent years researching, designing, modeling, and refining the horses before the final bronze figures were completed. The sculpture was officially dedicated on September 25, 1984. The nine mustangs were designed to appear as though they are moving naturally through a shallow stream. Their different poses and individual movements give the group a sense of motion, while water flowing through the plaza helps create the impression that the horses are actually running through a Texas landscape. The surrounding granite plaza and modern buildings provide a striking contrast to the untamed character represented by the horses. The creation of the Mustangs was an extensive artistic and engineering project. Glen developed models of the horses in his studio in Nairobi, Kenya, before the work was sent to a foundry in England for bronze casting. The completed sculptures were eventually transported to Texas, where they were carefully installed at Williams Square. The entire project took several years from its initial conception to its dedication. Beyond its artistic importance, the sculpture has become closely associated with the identity of Las Colinas and the city of Irving. Williams Square was designed around the Mustangs, making the artwork an integral part of the surrounding urban environment rather than simply an object placed in an open space. Visitors can walk around the plaza and view the horses from different angles, appreciating details that can be difficult to see from a single viewpoint. The Mustangs of Las Colinas also provides an opportunity to learn about the creative process behind large-scale bronze sculpture.

A museum and visitor center near the artwork explains the history of the project and Robert Glen’s work. Exhibits describe the development and production of the Mustangs, giving visitors a better understanding of the planning and craftsmanship required to create such a large installation. Williams Square underwent a major renovation that was completed in 2022. The improvements included enhancements to the plaza, landscaping, lighting, and water features surrounding the sculpture. The Mustangs themselves also received restoration work with the involvement of Robert Glen. These updates helped preserve the landmark while improving the surrounding public space. Today, the Mustangs of Las Colinas remains an important cultural and artistic attraction in Irving. It represents the area’s connection to Texas history while demonstrating the possibilities of large-scale public art. Whether visitors come to admire the craftsmanship, learn about Robert Glen, take photographs, or simply enjoy the surrounding plaza, the sculpture offers a distinctive experience. With its combination of art, history, architecture, and Texas-inspired imagery, the Mustangs of Las Colinas continues to be a defining feature of the Las Colinas community and an enduring part of Irving’s cultural landscape.
